Governments, corporations, and others target environmental defenders in order to silence not only these individuals, but the communities on whose behalf they speak. Environmental defenders are frequently the victims of retaliatory civil and criminal lawsuits, fabricated charges of very serious criminal acts, torture, and murder.
In short, the most basic civil and political rights of environmental defenders- the rights of freedom of expression, freedom of association, and even the right to life- are being routinely violated. EDLC has recruited top American and European law firms to help combat all of these types of human rights violations.
